Miscellaneous exercises

Tuesday,8th May 2007

Hi all,
I've finished studing Spanish for ten minutes and now I would like dedicate my time to the English language as I have been doing every day since 1st April!!

Now I will do some exercises about the difference between 'their' and 'theirs' :

1) Last evening I went out with my friends and we met theirs parents.
2)When I drove Jim to his home I passed in front of Max and Sue house; I thought that theirs house was smaller than I imagined.
3)Ann and Lucy are very good rollerblading, they are world champions and theirs work must be very hard!
4)Who is the owner of this beautiful shop? This shop belows to their that have been married for ten years.
5)Their house has been restructuring since March and for this reason they are sleeping to theirs parents house at the moment.

Well,I hope I've done well..
I'd like really improve my English, not only as regard to the grammar but also to the structure and the form of the text.
I have been trying keeping up with my English every day just for this reason!!

See you Anna Lisa.

Hi Anna Lisa,
I'm afraid you've mixed up 'their' and 'theirs'. You need to say:
their parents
their house
their work
We use 'theirs' when we have already mentioned who it belongs to, for example:
The house belongs to them. It is theirs.
Or, you can say: It is their house.

Please don't be downhearted about this - you just got mixed up. As I've said before, the English language is very complicated - even English students find it difficult! You manage to write lots of very complicated and difficult sentences that English students would find difficult.
You should remember that I am correcting your few mistakes, but 99% of your writing is perfectly correct - so you have done very well! Congratulations!

Here are some corrections:
